In giving Man fire Prometheus gave him life but damned himself in Zeus’ eyes and suffered mightily for his selfless generosity. The quality of Man’s life improved as each facet of this marvelous gift of fire was discovered: light, warmth, cooking, healing and the ability to forge and craft. Hephaestus, whose job is to chain Prometheus to the rock, follows them. Kratus states that this is a punishment for giving fire to human beings, and Prometheus must learn to like Zeus's rule. Hephaestus expresses his pity for Prometheus, lamenting the fact that he must bind his friend to the rock.

The oldest record of Prometheus is in Hesiod, but stories of theft of fire by a trickster figure are widespread around the world. Some other aspects of the story resemble the Sumerian myth of Enki (or Ea in later Babylonian mythology), who was also a bringer of civilisation who protected humanity against the other gods. The Fire Bringer takes readers on a journey that gives life to the stories of the great Olympian gods and goddesses. Discover what it means to be entrusted with the gift of fire, and why Prometheus betrayed his own king to save a lowly race of mortals. Prometheus is the "fire-bringer" who (in Greek mythology) gave the secret of fire to humans. Prometheus was the son of a Titan, one of the giant elder gods of Greek mythology. Prometheus was a friend to mortal men; his best-known act was sneaking into the heavens and stealing fire from the gods, which he then delivered to humans on Earth.

Prometheus is famous for a couple of seemingly unrelated stories: (1) the gift of fire to mankind and (2) being chained to a rock where every day an eagle came to eat his liver.

There is a connection, however, and one that shows why Prometheus, the father of the Greek Noah, was called the benefactor of mankind. Gift of Fire to Mankind. Prometheus Released By Heracles. Finally, Prometheus was released by another great hero, Heracles, who was brave enough to defy the gods and their power.

Heracles passed by the Caucasus rock as he headed for the garden of the Hesperides. He climbed to the peak in the Caucasus, struck the restraints from Prometheus and killed the vultures. texts All Books All Texts latest This Just In Smithsonian Libraries FEDLINK (US) Genealogy Lincoln Collection.

A minority of scholars believe that Prometheus the Fire-Bringer is actually the first play in the trilogy. One reason is that Prometheus Bound begins in medias res; some have observed that after the reconstructing the Bound and Unbound as the first and second play, there simply isn't enough mythic material left for a third-position Fire-Bringer.
